Stronghold Carbon Capture

We believe Stronghold Carbon Capture can capture 60,000 to 100,000 tons of CO₂ annually, and we believe this scale is achievable by the end of 2024. 

At Stronghold, we convert highly polluting mining waste into renewable energy, reclaiming land and reducing air and water pollution in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and local environmental authorities. 

The natural byproduct of our highly specialized power generation process is beneficial use ash, which we return to the previous mining waste sites.  The ash is high in calcium oxide content, which allows it to neutralize the acidity of the once-toxic mining waste sites and facilitate revegetation. This characteristic also allows our ash to convert CO₂ from ambient air into calcium carbonate, a geologically stable solid.

In partnership with the carbon mineralization experts Karbonetiq, we developed new direct air capture technology that facilitates the carbon mineralization process, transforming our ash into an effective carbon sink.

We're actually direct-air-mineralization. We're not just capturing CO₂, but we're also sequestering it at the same time. And so, from that perspective, we're one of one right now in terms of the scale and the project going forward.
